Late in the war, B-29s and other aircraft could attack Japanese targets almost without opposition. This B-29 flying over Mount Fuji symbolizes the air superiority of the Allies over Japan. (US Air Force)
509TH COMPOSITE GROUP
The War Department activated the 509th Composite Group on 17 December 1944 as part of the Second Air Force’s 315th Bombardment Wing, under the command of Colonel Paul Tibbets. It contained the 393rd Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy) plus technical support squadrons. Tibbets was made aware of the Manhattan Project in September 1944 and was told to prepare a B-29 unit to drop nuclear weapons. The organization of the 509th CG was unique among other composite groups, being totally self-supporting. Arnold gave Tibbets a wide latitude of authority and almost unlimited access to resources by use of a special codeword, Silverplate, which indicated the USAAF’s highest priority.
